My Doctor Who library music project
« on: September 28, 2020, 09:47:23 PM »
Hi everyone.

I mentioned this as my current big project on my "hello & thanks for having me" message, several weeks ago. It was greeted with some positive comments from members hereabouts, so I've been away to (among other things) compile as compact a list as I can from the complete Doctor Who music list that I have.

Of the 160 or so stories in the original "classic" Doctor Who series, the vast majority had music composed especially. (Much of that remains un-released & I may well compile a list of the missing composed music in case any of it has made its way onto library albums or onto other releases that people on here may be aware of.)

Only the stories in the following list make use of library music.

I'm hoping that some, if not all, of this might be known to a few of you & that some kind soul may be willing to make these tracks available to me. (Or point me in the right direction, if it's commercially available.)

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Green means I have it lossless
Orange means I have it in a lossy format
Light Green means it's available on CD, I just have to save up! :)

Also, I have a complete library of Doctor Who episodes in AVI format on line if anyone's curious to hear the music in context or, if you love a challenge, to listen out for some of the unidentified cues & see if you recognise them.

Okay, here we go...

As a classic who fan from the US since 1979, I never knew that library music was used so much in it during the 60's and 70's till I got into library music and the whole community of it 17 years ago or so. One episode not in your list that i'm 99.9% sure has library music is The Green Death. I remember some Jazz/Easy Listening sax or brass drivin groove in the distant background somewhere in the beginning of the episode (in Part 1 I think). Always wanted to know what that was.

Was surprised to see some things in your list from the 2nd Peter Davison story. I had thought by the early 80's it was all original synth score music.

Well, you may well be correct about the Green Death. The only thing I can say is that Doctor Who fans are obsessive in their quest for accuracy & on the Tardis Fandom site where I found my list, the music from the Green Death is down as being by Dudley Simpson, so he may well have composed something for that slot.

https://tardis.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_incidental_music_composers

The whole library music thing is completely new to me, so I'm certainly not in a position to know one way or the other. :)

One thing I will say is that, considering the small amount of library music I've listened to so far, I'm completely hooked already!

I have the Synchro Stings 78rpm disc on Impress IA 143 - is that the one you need?  There are only thirteen tracks on it in total, so there's probably another one out there somewhere.  My copy doesn't appear to be in the best shape, but I could upload it if needed.

If you we able to, that would be amazing! Thanks.

Whilst searching for that elusive other disc you mentioned, I came across a more recent compilation, "JW-2024, Vintage Drama, Various Artists" on a library site that contained 17 synchro-sting tracks among may others. (65 tracks in total!) I've extracted all the tracks but they're only in MP3 format, so I'd still be interested in a lossless rip if you have the inclination.

:)

I'm in the process of dubbing off the Synchro Stings 78, there are 26 of them on side 1 alone - most of them consisting of a single chord a couple of seconds long!  When I've finished side 2, I'll pop it up here and it might fill a few gaps.

That would brilliant! I'm already looking forward to scouring the videos to identify which ones were used!  :D

Here you go - as I say, the disc was quite damaged, especially at the start of side A, but it's just about listenable!  mega.nz/file/QhhDQYRb#mytTCQs9wnyTc55xNsCHqIbgV1kQef_xlfW8mzw0qQw
