1977 Betamax Demo Video Music
« on: September 04, 2020, 05:29:35 AM »
Ok folks, really curious if anyone knows what the library music being used in this vintage 1977 Betamax demo video is. A lot of the music in this sounds very familiar to me but nothing comes to mind. The main big orchestral pop type theme that plays starting at 46 secs in the beginning and at the end is the tune i'm most curious about. But curious to know any of the music.

I can't identify the tracks, but that was fun to watch.
It really wasn't that long ago (at least from my perspective) that missing some show or news event on TV was a BIG DEAL... 'cause you'd never see it again! Those were the days, as they say.

I too would love the identity, Library, artists for these. I would say these are more than likely library; however I can't place which label this sounds most like .

I know...it does seem like just yesterday. Love looking for relics of nostalgia of growing up, which is how I stumbled onto this yesterday :)

Yep they are for sure library. All of these demo videos or training videos from the 70's and 80's always used library music. Most of the time from what i've seen in the past, in the mid - late 70's they would hit Dewolfe, Bruton and Valentino for these. In the 80's it was Network most of the time. So i'm gonna bet these may be somewhere in the Dewolfe family (which Rouge also covers). For sure not Bruton or Valentino.

The opening funky baroque track is very familiar, and I think it's a British recording, but I can't place it.

I'm not sure the rest of it is de Wolfe - their stuff is usually quite easy to spot as they liked to use Alf Bigden on drums and Dave Richmond on bass at around that time, which gives their tracks a rather distinctive sound, and I can't hear that here.

My first thought was most of the music had a rather polished, American sound to them, and I suspect it might be from a US library (though obviously not Valentino!) - I was wondering whether it might be Cinemusic, but I'm not sure it's quite right for them either.

I've actually never heard of Cinemusic before. This does have a potential US sound to it, but nothing that rings a bell. It's probably some really obscure stuff since no one's been able to ID it so far.

Very interesting find, Porn Library, and fun to watch!

Some of this music was used in a 1971 ABC Fall Preview promo reel produced by ABC On Air Advertising, music credited to Harry Betts.  For example, the music at 1:26 in this video can be heard at 2:55 here:

I wouldn't be surprised if most of the other pieces are by Betts as well.  Also, the optical effects were very similar to those used in the ABC promos, so this was probably produced by the same people that did the ABC work.  Some nice stuff, very cutting-edge at the time.

Ahhh, I think you may have just nailed this whole mystery. Like you said, it's possible the Beta promo may have been produced by ABC Advertising, in which this would make it in house music exclusive to that company and never available for licence elsewise. I'll research some of Betts' work and see if I can find any references.

Hey Porn Library, a friend helped identify the track at 46 seconds that you were interested in as the ABC Wide World of Entertainment theme from 1973-74.  Found a couple of examples on Youtube:

He also said some of the cues are from the ABC Sunday Night Movie from 1971, but I couldn't find any examples on Youtube to verify this.

Also, this Betamax demo is from 1975, not 1977.

Thanks for the update! That pretty much seals it that this was a sort of custom music library stuff. And 1975 actually makes more sense for all the music used in the demo. Too bad these tape reel only/custom libraries from the day are next to impossible to get hold of or find the original reels. Lots of gems like this are lurking throughout history.

One last piece of info then I'll put this one to bed.  Here's the entry from the January-June 1973 Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries:

ABC WIDE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT--22 MISC. SPOTS & BUMPERS; music by Harry R. Betts.  Appl. author: ABC/Dunhill Music, Inc., employer for hire.
ABC/Dunhill Music, Inc.; 26jan73;EU389639.

Would love to get my hands on that tape!

That makes 2 of us! On that reel (or another Harry Betts ABC reel) there's gotta be a full length version of the tune also, cause in the Betamax demo, it's not a short bumper like on the ABC TV stuff.
