Basically, a producer will chop off the highest and lowest frequencies of a recording, in an attempt to create a louder sound overall, so there is less dynamic range, because this suits the tastes of kids listening too loudly with crap earbuds on crap devices in loud environments.

To any music companies reading this:  Send us your old recordings and we'll do it properly for you, probably for free!

As long as they give access to the master tapes! Then there will be wavs with 2116KB/s bit rate that will knock the innards out of any earbuds!

Originally they were released as vinyl records, yes. The Vaults series were overcompressed brickwalled versions of the recordings used to make those records. The series is strictly downloads, yes. But each release is just a renaming and brickwalling of another full title, they aren't compilations.

Apologies for taking weeks to respond to your answer to my query. I actually got lost and couldn't find my way back to this thread  ;D

In life, the best answers are almost always come from the simplest explanations. I appreciate your taking the time to spell out the "why" questions, not only for myself but for anybody else who might have been pondering similar questions.

By the way, it's nice to see you back here @ LMT.
