Made in 2018 with music recorded in 1974. This music was provided on LP's and was played to the general public in shopping malls, supermarkets, clothing stores and just about any other retail related environment.

This is very cool. I don't think it's been posted here before. Thanks for the link, JK!

I dig the reverb treatment, which really gives it a distant, flashback vibe.

... I wonder if Frayker had anything to do with this

Gotta say, the titles are hilarious and on point!

Here are the FLAC files made into an album, with tags and cover:

i love the titles 'restroom retreat' and 'impulse purchase'. with just 1 or 2 mall announcements mixed in this would basically wisk anyone to a 70s shopping mall of their choice

thanks for the FLAC @ mega link

I'm wondering though how much of an American phenomenon Muzak was. I'm intriged about the descriptions of the sound of 60s and 70s supermarkets, I can only faintly imagine what it must have been like. Somebody really should mix into the music some equally hilarious announcements of washing detergent being on sale and kids being lost.

According to wikipedia, Muzak was first used in the United States in 1922. I would say it was a pretty big phenomenon in the US. The psychological manipulation of the music to increase worker productivity is pretty interesting stuff:

I would love to have a clean copy of this without the reverb.

I was thinking the same, the tracks are sourced from different Muzak albums, most notably I think Stimulus Progression 6, which is part of my megathread from a while back.

Greta's link is now down :(

From what I could gather, the original Youtube uploader said he wanted to capture "What the music actually sounded like inside the mall in the 1970s" .. This is why he added the reverb, in an attempt to capture that horrible horn speaker sound.

I loved his track selection, but hate the crappy sound :(
I would very much like the clean tracks :)

Adding onto this, any Seeburg 1000, 3M Cantata or Rowe Customusic (tapes and Seeburg 1000-compatible records) rips will also be highly appreciated. :)

I might as well.
Here's a recording I made of easy-listening music from an FM subcarrier in 2004. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA1eKD4CLDQ
Records 20 & 25 of the Oct., 1961 Seeburg Basic Library series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPpM5_nINe8
And records 102 & 106 of the April, 1976 Seeburg Basic series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZsjV4dDIvg
