Great to see you back with the "classics on CD" (so to speak) shares. Mega thank you for what they're calling BV 15, the classic Pop Vocals LP. Been wanting a "CD" version of that for years. Great they finally issued it.

How did you manage to get them in flac? Isn't it just mp3 that they offer on their site to download or do you have the actual CD's?

APM is actually approving applications with alarming frequency lately. I think because of the downturn in licensing due to the pandemic, they are approving everyone. If you get an account with APM, you get access to untouched .wav files.

Thanks for the amazing share, BWP! I think I have most of them, but now I'll be checking the quality levels. I haven't really been using LMT longer-term, but this was the most valuable for me of any shares to date. Thanks!

Ok being the audiophile I am, i'm going to complain about the treatment they gave "Pop Vocals". In short, they screwed it up with a shit ton of compression and dynamic blasting. Why can't they be like KPM and Omni and leave the mastering as it was on the original master tapes?

The audio goes in and out on every beat it's so compressed. A big letdown. It's like the more modern the remasters are, the worse they get. And this goes for more than library classics being murdered. Even classic commercial albums as well. Not sure about the others as I haven't grabbed any of the other reissues as of yet, but this is my report on that 1. People can make their own judgement.

its called preset mastering, people who are not educated enough just pastes mastering "fx" chain for every track, adjusts gain and thats it .
Some scam reissue labels were "re-mastering" youtube downloads.... what to say...

Crikey... even I was doing it more attentively than that when I first got my Magix Audio Cleaning Lab software around 2007! I saw the "auto remaster" option and immediately thought, no way! I would instead spend ages with Magix and also with Cool Edit Pro, getting the declicking and dehissing set just right so all nasty noises were removed but the music was preserved. Manually declicking could take hours... and often did!

With master tapes, surely it doesn't require much work... the original tapes would be pretty good to start with. Just a very small dehissing would be all that's required.

Thank you for these BWP. I'm happy the original covers are included.

Actually computerized dehissing is a big no no. That damages the audio big time giving it a digital underwater sound (as I call it). With the master tape mixdowns there's usually little to no hiss anyhow when working with the original 15 or 30 ips reel the sessions were mixed down to. Which you usually had 2 copies. One straight mixdown and one vinyl cutting master where EQ's were adjusted for vinyl pressing.

All that might be needed if using the straight mixdown master is a little EQ adjustments on the lows and highs for CD or digital download re-issues. In many cases, the secondary vinyl cutting mixdown masters still exist, and with those, it's just a simple straight flat transfer with no tinkering to do it right (like how the early CD's were from 1982 - 1993 or so before they began this "loudness" junk).

I was a mixdown and mastering engineer for almost 25 years, worked for a few different independent labels in that time, and this is how I always did things when it came to master tape sourced material.

If the dehissing is kept to a low level it doesn't generally give you that "underwater" sound. I once heard a track on a CD which was obviously a 1940s/50s recording which was so badly remastered it was impossible to listen to. It was just a gargling noise.

On many of my recordings I only dehissed the blank space at the start, the fade at the end, and any silent or very quiet passages.

The declicker is another potential source of trouble, especially with brass instruments. It distorts brass sounds... especially trombones for some reason.

I re-recorded BRH 11 again today for a comparison. It doesn't sound hugely different to my ears.

I now remember it was a Percy Faith CD but I cannot remember the title. Maybe one of you may know the CD in question? I got rid of it as the standard of remastering was so bad. I cannot believe anyone heard it and passed it as OK for inclusion on a commercial release. I just wish I could remember the name of the CD.
