Lossless Audio Checker v2.0.7 is unreliable
« on: November 25, 2021, 11:40:49 AM »
I've stumbled upon a piece of software that claims to detect transcoding and upsampling in lossless audio files. It is called "Lossless Audio Checker":

I've tried it out today, and it appears that this software, in its current version 2.0.7, does not do what it says on the tin.

The test case was a FLAC rip I made a few years ago of one of my CDs using Exact Audio Copy (v1.0 beta 3), observing the ripping protocol of the now-defunct "what.cd" forum:

https://jaykayonline.com/eac/eac_ripping.html

The rip was confirmed to be accurate:

I converted the original FLAC files to MP3 with Lame (v3.100) at 320 kbit/s. Then I transcoded these MP3 files to FLAC.

Checking the spectrals with Spek (v0.8.2) shows the typical changes in audio data between the original and the transcoded FLAC files quite clearly.

A run of Lossless Audio Checker over the transcoded files yields the following result:

Code: [Select]

Wrap-up: The Lossless Audio Checker, in its current version 2.0.7, is unreliable. It appears to produce a lot of false negatives, meaning: it does not recognise transcoded files. Do not trust its results.

Sorry for not including screenshots of spectrals. I would have to look for a way to store the images elsewhere, and I can't be bothered.

Sorry I don't keep up with all this tech stuff, but that's a pretty good dub album.
btw, you can use imgur.com for free & easy image hosting.

Yes, it is! Everything and anything from Wackies is fab. Thank you for the image hoster, I will give it a try next time.
