A Guide to Library Music?
« on: May 09, 2021, 12:38:04 PM »
As a relative newcomer to Library music, I'd be interested to know if there is a good reference work or website that gives a good introduction or overview of the scene? Many thanks.

Start with these three excellent books:

The Mood Modern by Oliver Lomax

Unusual Sounds: The Hidden History of Library Music by David Hollander

I remember a thread here on LMT, about "how would you define library music to somebody knowing nothing about this genre".

Well, maybe a bit off-topic, but just to give an example of the scene, this is the best definition of it I've ever read (don't remember where though)

"The EGOLESS music that surrounds you each day"

Greta is right, there is a thread someone on here explaining what library music is and other terminology to describe it.

One thing I found years ago is this audio which is around 27 minutes long that talks all about library music.  Hope this helps.

Hi scaramouch,

The books recommended by stackjackson are good, but if you're a complete newcomer "The Mood Modern" might be a little too in-depth to start with and 98 % of the focus is on the KPM/Bruton libraries. I've had it on my shelf for ages, but recently give it another go and it's very well-written with stellar research and cool interviews with the main players of KPM/Bruton. It's definitely recommended but not something I'd start with.

"Unusual Sounds" is wonderful to flick through with some great photos and nice interviews, but on the whole it's a pretty uneven read with some strange, glaring omissions – and it's ridiculously overpriced, especially when you consider the fact that the last 23 pages are nothing but movie posters and lobby cards! Still, it's probably the best overview available at the moment and it's beautifully designed.

"The Music Library" is very thin on actual reading material, but it's visually stunning if you enjoy the graphics and artwork of library albums, plus it covers way more labels than "Unusual Sounds".

These Rate Your Music lists are pretty good entry points if you need listening advice:

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/Moahaha/smokin-hot-library-music/ (heavy on the Italian stuff)

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/TheScientist/rym-ultimate-box-set-library-music/ (A nice "virtual" box set and a great little primer)

https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/album/all-time/g:library-music/ (This list is a bit misleading and pretty odd...)
