Title: Soulseek
Post by: tonyc1971 on December 10, 2020, 01:14:22 PM
Hi All !

I think someone touched on this recently, but can't find the post.  However, I used to share my library rips via SS and wondered if anyone still uses it as no issues in sharing what I have.  Also, I've heard of a couple of dodgy download links, so if anyone else is still using it, please let me know as I'm sure others may be interested.  If members on LMT do use it regularly, I'll jump aboard.

I also used w@rezbb to download music also but that seems to have long gone and wondered if SS is still as popular as it once was ?

Cheers, Tony

I used SoulSeek fairly recently.  Usually just on there when ice pre-arranged to meet someone.

I've recently started using SoulSeek and openly share a lot of my content.  It can prove helpful when looking for certain titles, and the whole, 'share and share alike', incentive is a good one to have, but as is often the case, there are those who place conditions and restrictions upon that which they want to share, (something I must stress that they're entirely entitled to do and as such is their perogative), but it does leave some of us mere mortals in the library music sharing pool feeling a little left out in the cold.  But then, that's kind of the nature of the beast, I guess.  People use it as they see fit for their own needs.  There's no right or wrong way to use it.

I don't use it as often as in the past (I'm "allergino" there), but it's still very popular in my opinion.
Also, as I'm on a Mac machine and got the latest "Big Sur" operating system, SS is not working good at all now for me, and just can't find a stable full-working version for Big Sur.

Downgrade back to Mojave, Greta. Personally, I refuse to switch to Big Sur.

Stack, Big Sur works seamlessly. It's just the Soulseek application not working very well, nothing else.

Ok, I'll keep that in mind.

I probably gotten some flacs from some of you on there, I should definitely add some of my folders to share that I haven't, including the big library folder, but I'm on there so erratically the last few years. I think I must have started with it over a dozen years ago, gotten some really good documentary vids like the one on Raymond Scott and another on the BBC Radiophonics Workshop there.

Soulseek is very important for me!! But a few days ago, I had some problem with Soulseek and I can't download nothing now!! I was downloanding (and sharing the downloads) a great collection of library music. When I had this problem with Soulseek, I was downloading great FLAC collections of new libraries (Intervox, West One Music, Berlin, Killer Tracks, RCAL) and new releases from classic libraries (Sonoton). I would want if the user who shares this collections is a member here (I think so because he was sharing our lovely KILLA uploads too). But I can't remember his/her username because I added him/her on my user lists, but I remember that username like JWLW???? Consonants!! Are you here?? Does anybody know who is he/she? Finally, another question: beyond Soulseek, where are users sharing their great collections? (My computer has Windows sistem). Obviously, if I get the solution of my Soulseek problem, I'll add again that great users. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Right here at LMT, of course.

Right on!  SoulSeek is great if someone is opening their folders to you to download en masse.  When my hard drive went down members here helped me glean it all back via SoulSeek but I like the more resonance touch of the forum, with images and a bit of chat thrown in too.

I haven't got a lot of library at the moment, as since the last time I restarted building my music collection I've been getting a lot of stuff besides library, but I AM on slsk almost constantly, I'm keir on there.

One way to find people on there is simply to do a wishlist search for people with something you already have, you'll almost certainly find people who also have stuff you don't already have.

Hello tonyc1971! I do use it and got some nice stuff from this p2p network. I really would like to share with these group's member, as I don't have any account on the file-sharing servers around the... globe ;-)  Search for theotherone. cheers!

Well, I've got myself back up and running on SS after myself keep forgetting to do so.  My ID is the same as here (to keep it simple) so feel free to have a look around and drop me a message and say hi and who are you on the forum.  I've set no restrictions as of today so will monitor and if my media PC is on, I'll keep SS open too.

I'll have to get to grips with it again and get some 'wanted' files as still need a few JW/Impress/Prog Music and Bruton FLAC's.

Cheers, Tony

To be honest when I’m online I go into the Library Music room but don’t expect any chat from anyone, but I have been heading there each time in login.  It’s all a bit irrelevant anyway as most users just search for the files they are looking for.

I didn't even know Soulseek was still a thing in today's cyber world....good to hear it hasn't been axed like all the others. In my very early days of discovering library music via 70's adult films/porn, Soulseek was the place I ended up ID-ing a lot of the what we all now consider library classics (through random album downloading).

Only thing with Slsk though, it's all mp3's....unless people started sharing more lossless stuff? Great memories though of the old days for me when I think of Slsk  ;D

Actually, you'll find lossless (wav/flac) there pretty regularly these days.

... I ... wondered if anyone still uses it ... and wondered if SS is still as popular as it once was ?

Cheers, Tony

Buenas tardes, Tony! I've been on Slsk forever, and it still appears to be reasonably popular. Small wonder, perhaps, as it's the last one standing of the filesharing networks with public or semi-public access that existed twenty years ago. Besides What.CD I think it was also the best of them.

... I've recently started using SoulSeek and openly share a lot of my content.  ... but as is often the case, there are those who place conditions and restrictions upon that which they want to share ...

The way in which you manage access to your share depends also on the client. I used the official Slsk client for a long time, and it allows you to restrict uploads to your buddies only while enabling other users to still see your files when they search. For me this worked quite well. When someone messaged me because he was interested in a rip I could check his share and then add him to buddies if he passed my (not very strict) criteria for access.

I switched to Nicotine+ later whose functionality is a bit different, though not by much. The main feature missing is the possibility for others to see my files in their searches even if they are not in my buddy list. I have therefore split my share into lossy and lossless files, where the former are accessible to anyone, and the latter are restricted to buddies. The slight downside is that non-buddies have no way of knowing what they could potentially get from me. But it's a reasonable compromise given the circumstances.

(Feel encouraged to give me a shout on Slsk if you want access.)

... I'm on a Mac machine and got the latest "Big Sur" operating system, SS is not working good at all now for me, and just can't find a stable full-working version for Big Sur.

Easy one. Set up a virtual machine and run the operating system and the Slsk client of your choice on it. Nicotine+ used to be a pain in the arse to set up, but not anymore. Getting the latest version 3.0.2 to run is a breeze. Recommended.

Soulseek is very important for me!! But a few days ago, I had some problem with Soulseek and I can't download nothing now!!

Try out Nicotine+ in the latest version, which I think is 3.0.2. It runs on Linux and Windows.

Cheerio!
