Cheesy in a fun way: pop standards w/organ - early 70s-ish
« on: March 19, 2021, 02:28:09 AM »
This was inspired by tuneboy's adjacent thread, "Alan Hawkshaw Plays the Philicorda," and its info on organ promo records- something I hadn't been aware of. Tuneboy mentioned the "Ad-Rhythm" label that specialized in promos – and I took a look on Discogs, which led me to these; found/DLed elsewhere.

These two LPs are actually small pop combos, fronted by an organ or other electric keyboard. They're from various artists, and sound like they were compiled from various sources. The album art below pretty much says it all…

256k MP3, originally marked as LAME 3.97 rips, and as clean as other vinyl rips you can find @LMT. I did modest intro/outro trimming/cleanup, using a native MP3 audio editor (Fission) so that the trims didn't cause any MP3 generation loss. Ready for your listening pleasure.  ;)

Also, Discogs provided a list of the organs used for the Vol. 2 LP. Quite a variety:

Organs:

Thomas (Tracks A2, B5)
Lowrey (Track A4)
Yamaha (Tracks A5, B9)
Conn (Track A7)
Farfisa (Track A8)
Philicorda (Track B1)
Viscount (Track B30
Baldwin (Track B7)
Riha (Track B8)

Thanks, kimhill! Interesting research. I am curious about many of those Ad-Rhythm LPs.
Now I have some clues to what they sound like.
I see Farfisa is mentioned. We always used Farfisa in my old band, so I have a soft spot
for that sound.

I have uploaded the 3 Ad-Rhythm LPs I have. One files, flac.
https://www.discogs.com/Harold-Smart-Smart-Latin/release/2928330
https://www.discogs.com/Harold-Smart-Thomas-Percussion-In-Stereo/release/6711855
https://www.discogs.com/Santi-Latora-Blue-Flame/release/7306874

They all have some nuggets worth checking out.
Here is the link:

The Latora was licensed from the Italian Durium label.

Some stuff by Harry Stoneham is really good.
I have several of his non-Ad-Rhythms.

To top it off: here is a real rarity by one Bob Zellin,
probably as much a promo for himself as "organ player for hire" as a promo for
Hammond and the famous Baldwin harpsichord:

The back sleeve tells the story.

Fascinating info & music- thanks! Happy to shed some light on that label.

I DLed everything, of course. Hopefully I'll split that stuff sometime soon- good to have on tap. It's interesting that for the moment I seem to be the organ guy- it's really not at all music I thought about, or cared much to audition. But these organ recordings are an interesting niche, and they are so totally in, and of, their time. Hard not to be drawn in, which obviously has happened in my case.

EDIT: stackjackson hooked me up with better cover art:

Thanks for these! Back in my vinyl collecting days, I always grabbed whatever organ LPs I could find. They fascinated me for multiple reasons, some personal.

You can grab a good cover image of Blue Flame here:

Taking a look for more promo/Ad-Rhythm label stuff & found this album art. The artist here, Tony Back, is well-represented on Ad-Rhythm, but this label is ELKA – according to Discogs, "an italian manufacturer of electric organs and synthesizers, in the 1980s it became part of GEM (General Electro Music)." Couldn't find any of the music, but if the music is as dramatic as the album art, it must be amazing…

Ahem… Another Ad-Rhythm/Tony Back release. Looks like Tony never went halfway on his album art. Couldn't find music for this one either.
